Today’s Recommendation is for the HBO show Carnivàle, a 2 season show that aired from 2003 until 2005.
Carnivale is one of the best shows I have ever watched, and it’s a shame it was only 2 seasons. I read it was originally planned for 6, and than cut short, which is disappointing, I wish it had gone on longer.
Carnivale is a story about good and evil, it starts showing 2 different settings, one setting with a man representing good, and another representing evil.
Taking place in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl in 1934, Carnivale starts off with a young man named Ben Hawkins, who after a tragic event, ends up with a traveling carnival. As he travels with them he finds out more about himself, and what he is supposed to do.
Carnivale has a great cast, and all the actors play their parts perfectly. With Clancy Brown, Tim DeKay, Carla Gallo, Nick Stahl, and one of my favorite actors Michael J. Anderson playing Samson, the man is charge of running the carnival. The characters each have a role in the carnival, whether as a performer, or setting up and taking down the carnival as it travels from city to city.
The production of the show is very well done, the setting and feel of the show really feels like it takes place in Oklahoma in 1934. All the sets, clothing, it’s all spot on to what it should be. There are a lot of scenes with a lot of dust swirling around, very well recreating what it must have been like in the Dust Bowl.
Carnivale is my favorite HBO show, which with all their great series, is really saying something. I can’t recommend it enough, and with only two 12 episode seasons, it won’t take long to watch, which is both good and bad.
Both seasons are available in 6 disc DVD sets, they are both available right now for $22.87 with free shipping at DeepDiscount.com (Seasons One/Two), and occasionally go on sale for $19.99 at Amazon. They are well worth that price for the amazing quality of the show.
