Recommendation: MirrorMask

For today’s recommendation, I’m going to recommend my first movie, I’ve always been more of a TV watcher than movie watcher, but I love both and will put recommendations of my favorites from both mediums on the blog.

Today’s Recommendation is for the 2005 fantasy movie MirrorMask.  Created by the Jim Henson Company, Mirrormask follows the story of Helena, a 15 year old circus performer, who is cast into a fantasy world, where she must find a mystical item known as the Mirrormask, to help save the kingdom and be able to return home.

One of the first things you notice about Mirrormask, once Helena goes into the fantasy world, is the visual style.  It is really well done, and looks like it’s from another world.  From the buildings to the streets, to the forest, everything looks different.  There is some CGI mixed in as well.

Over the story Helena encounters some very weird creatures, who help along the way.  The movie is similar to the Labyrinth in that way, there are a lot of unique creatures that usually make you laugh.  She also meets a man who helps guide her through this world, a strange place she’s never been to before.  The story in the fantasy world progresses nicely, and I was very happy with the ending.

Mirrormask was created by the people who made The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth in the 80’s, if you liked those movies, you will love MirrorMask.  There are a lot of similarities.

Amazon currently has MirrorMask for under $10, and will probably go even cheaper in the future.
