 The Lone Gunmen

The Lone Gunmen is a spinoff from the X-Files, aired in 2001, based on the characters from the X-Files.  It only lasted 13 episodes, and was cancelled, which was disappointing, because I thought the show was excellent, and had a lot more potential.

The Lone Gunmen is about a group of 3 friends, John Byers, Richard Langly, and Melvin Frohike (played by Bruce Harwood, Dean Haglund, and Tom Braidwood respectively).  Together these 3 run a newspaper called “The Lone Gunmen”.  A newspaper about conspiracy theories and things related to that.

For the show, we follow the Lone Gunmen, as they investigate and and try to solve a variety of crimes, from a top secret computer chip that could spy on anyone, accusing X-Files character Walter Skinner of murder, a children’s TV show giving away National Security secrets, and my favorite episode, about locating a water powered car.

cast

There are 2 additional characters introduced that help the show, first is Yves Adele Harlow (played by Zuleikha Robinson), a spy who is always out for herself, often taking things the Gunmen find out and taking the credit, money, or both.  There is also Jimmy Bond (played by Stephen Snedden), they meet him in the 2nd episode, coaching a blind football team.  He ends up working with them, more often getting in the way than helping, but his heart is in the right place.

The Lone Gunmen TV Show doesn’t explain the origins of how the guys met, if you are interested in seeing how they met, the X-Files Season 5 episode Unusual Suspects shows the story of how the 3 of them came together, as well as how they met Mulder.

The Lone Gunmen is a 3 disc set, featuring all 13 hour long episodes from the series, plus the X-Files Season 9 episode where their story is wrapped up.  There are also a few special features, a few commentaries, and featurettes about the show.  Overall a very good set, which only has an MSRP of $29.99 and can be found on sale for less than $20.  If I see the set on sale anywhere I will be sure to post about it here.
