Today’s Recommendation is a show I started watching this past August, Psych.

Psych follows lifelong best friends Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster (played by James Roday and Dulé Hill respectively), who a start a psychic detective agency “Psych”, as they solve cases working for the Santa Barbara Police Department.

In the premiere episode Shawn makes the police think he is a psychic, and gets hired to help on a case.  Shawn’s great observational skills allow him to notice things no one else would and make it appear he gathered information about people through a psychic vision.  Raised by his father Henry (played by Corbin Bernsen), also a detective, Shawn was always tested on observing things and given lessons by his father that would later help him in solving these cases.  In fact, the episodes usually start off with a flashback to when Shawn and Gus were kids, and Shawn learned a lesson from his father, that was relevant to the crime they were solving in that episode.

Psych is one of the funniest shows I have ever watched, a lot of laughs come from Shawn and Gus, together they are hilarious.  Shawn also always jokes about Detective Lassiter or “Lassie” or he’s called, at the SBPD.  Detective Lassiter (played by Timothy Omundson), doesn’t believe Shawn is really psychic, and doesn’t like having Shawn working on the cases either.  This usually leads to Shawn and Gus sneaking around to find information, before the police department, and than having Shawn have a ‘vision’ and revealing it to everyone.

The episodes have quite a bit of variety, usually about a murder, similar to Monk, but they’re are some weird circumstances.  There’s been a murder at a Spelling Bee, a Civil War reenactment rehearsal, a comic book convention, and the most bizarre of all, a dead man who had the bite marks from a Tyrannosaurus Rex.  The show also tries different things every so often, such an the episode where Gus’s uncle comes to visit, and thinks Gus is the psychic detective, not Shawn.  So for the whole case, Gus is acting as the detective to impress his Uncle, while still trying to make the police think Shawn is the psychic.

Psych is currently airing its 3rd season on USA, with the first 2 seasons having been released on DVD, in 4 discs sets with 15 episodes for Season 1, and 16 episodes for Season 2.  Like the Monk DVD releases, there aren’t many special features, which is a bit disappointing.  The sets are still worth it for the show alone however, but with other networks DVD’s having a lot of features, I would like to see USA shows start to include more.

Though I don’t see Psych on sale anywhere now, it does go on sale regularly at Target, if it’s going to be on sale there soon, I will post about it here.

Coming on Friday nights on USA, Psych is the perfect show to watch along with Monk and a very funny detective show.
