Recommendation: Supernatural

For my recommendation post today, I decided to go with a show I just started watching recently, but have really enjoyed so far, and that is Supernatural.
I was hesitant to try the show at first, but after reading some thoughts about it, I decided to give it a shot. I’m glad I did. While watching the show, you begin to think, ‘this is on the CW?’. It doesn’t fit for me with the other shows I’ve seen on that channel. The only other show on the CW I’ve watched and really liked was Veronica Mars, but that’s another post for another time.
Supernatural is about, as the title says, Supernatural phenomenon. The show follows Sam and Dean Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively), as they go around America ‘hunting’ these Supernatural creatures. Each episode focuses on a different place, different people, and a different supernatural entity. For the different kinds of things they encounter, there are different ways they must be destroyed. A lot of information they learn from their dad’s journal, information he gathered over his years of hunting. With Sam and Dean following the family business, a lot of knowledge is at their fingertips, but there is still quite a bit they must learn on their own. It’s not all standalone episodes, as over the course of the season their is an overarching mythology that they are working towards completing.
Over the 22 episode first season, they encounter a lot, while trying to find their dad, and become closer and brothers. That’s one of the best aspects of the show, through all the action and drama, the 2 brothers become closer friends than they ever have been.
The show is great, lots of horror, action, drama, and even some comedy. One thing I was surprised to find, it has a few crew members from one of my all-time favorite shows, The X-Files. I’ve seen John Shiban, Kim Manners, and Darin Morgan’s names in the credits, all ex-X-Files crew. Very nice surprise, and sometimes I do get an X-Files feeling from Supernatural.
Currently in its 4th season on The CW, low prices have become easy to find for the first 2 seasons. The 3rd season just was released this past August, so it will be a little harder to find a really cheap price. I have all 3 seasons out, and haven’t paid more than $18 per season. If I see sub $20 prices I’ll be sure to post about them here on the blog.
